11:29
　さて群衆が群がり集まったので、イエスは語り出された、「この時代は邪悪な時代である。それはしるしを求めるが、ヨナのしるしのほかには、なんのしるしも与えられないであろう。

11:30
　というのは、ニネベの人々に対してヨナがしるしとなったように、人の子もこの時代に対してしるしとなるであろう。

11:31
　南の女王が、今の時代の人々と共にさばきの場に立って、彼らを罪に定めるであろう。なぜなら、彼女はソロモンの知恵を聞くために、地の果からはるばるきたからである。しかし見よ、ソロモンにまさる者がここにいる。

11:32
　ニネベの人々が、今の時代の人々と共にさばきの場に立って、彼らを罪に定めるであろう。なぜなら、ニネベの人々はヨナの宣教によって悔い改めたからである。しかし見よ、ヨナにまさる者がここにいる。

★ヨナ書(3:1-10)

3:1
　時に主の言葉は再びヨナに臨んで言った、

3:2
　「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、あなたに命じる言葉をこれに伝えよ」。

3:3
　そこでヨナは主の言葉に従い、立って、ニネベに行った。ニネベは非常に大きな町であって、これを行きめぐるには、三日を要するほどであった。

3:4
　ヨナはその町にはいり、初め一日路を行きめぐって呼ばわり、「四十日を経たらニネベは滅びる」と言った。

3:5
　そこでニネベの人々は神を信じ、断食をふれ、大きい者から小さい者まで荒布を着た。

3:6
　このうわさがニネベの王に達すると、彼はその王座から立ち上がり、朝服を脱ぎ、荒布をまとい、灰の中に座した。

3:7
　また王とその大臣の布告をもって、ニネベ中にふれさせて言った、「人も獣も牛も羊もみな、何をも味わってはならない。物を食い、水を飲んではならない。

3:8
　人も獣も荒布をまとい、ひたすら神に呼ばわり、おのおのその悪い道およびその手にある強暴を離れよ。

3:9
　あるいは神はみ心をかえ、その激しい怒りをやめて、われわれを滅ぼされないかもしれない。だれがそれを知るだろう」。

3:10
　神は彼らのなすところ、その悪い道を離れたのを見られ、彼らの上に下そうと言われた災を思いかえして、これをおやめになった。

　神よ、あなたのいつくしみによって、わたしをあわれみ、あなたの豊かなあわれみによって、わたしのもろもろのとがをぬぐい去ってください。

51:2
　わたしの不義をことごとく洗い去り、わたしの罪からわたしを清めてください。

　神よ、わたしのために清い心をつくり、わたしのうちに新しい、正しい霊を与えてください。

　わたしをみ前から捨てないでください。あなたの聖なる霊をわたしから取らないでください。

　あなたはいけにえを好まれません。たといわたしが燔祭をささげてもあなたは喜ばれないでしょう。

　神の受けられるいけにえは砕けた魂です。神よ、あなたは砕けた悔いた心をかろしめられません。


◆今日の読書：出エジプト記(10:21-11:10)

10:21
　主はまたモーセに言われた、「天にむかってあなたの手をさし伸べ、エジプトの国に、くらやみをこさせなさい。そのくらやみは、さわれるほどである」。

10:22
　モーセが天にむかって手をさし伸べたので、濃いくらやみは、エジプト全国に臨み三日に及んだ。

10:23
　三日の間、人々は互に見ることもできず、まただれもその所から立つ者もなかった。しかし、イスラエルの人々には、みな、その住む所に光があった。

10:24
　そこでパロはモーセを召して言った、「あなたがたは行って主に仕えなさい。あなたがたの子供も連れて行ってもよろしい。ただ、あなたがたの羊と牛は残して置きなさい」。

10:25
　しかし、モーセは言った、「あなたは、また、わたしたちの神、主にささげる犠牲と燔祭の物をも、わたしたちにくださらなければなりません。

10:26
　わたしたちは家畜も連れて行きます。ひずめ一つも残しません。わたしたちは、そのうちから取って、わたしたちの神、主に仕えねばなりません。またわたしたちは、その場所に行くまでは、何をもって、主に仕えるべきかを知らないからです」。

10:27
　けれども、主がパロの心をかたくなにされたので、パロは彼らを去らせようとしなかった。

10:28
　それでパロはモーセに言った、「わたしの所から去りなさい。心して、わたしの顔は二度と見てはならない。わたしの顔を見る日には、あなたの命はないであろう」。

10:29
　モーセは言った、「よくぞ仰せられました。わたしは、二度と、あなたの顔を見ないでしょう」。

11:1
　主はモーセに言われた、「わたしは、なお一つの災を、パロとエジプトの上にくだし、その後、彼はあなたがたをここから去らせるであろう。彼が去らせるとき、彼はあなたがたを、ことごとくここから追い出すであろう。

11:2
　あなたは民の耳に語って、男は隣の男から、女は隣の女から、それぞれ銀の飾り、金の飾りを請い求めさせなさい」。

11:3
　主は民にエジプトびとの好意を得させられた。またモーセその人は、エジプトの国で、パロの家来たちの目と民の目とに、はなはだ大いなるものと見えた。

11:4
　モーセは言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『真夜中ごろ、わたしはエジプトの中へ出て行くであろう。

11:5
　エジプトの国のうちのういごは、位に座するパロのういごをはじめ、ひきうすの後にいる、はしためのういごに至るまで、みな死に、また家畜のういごもみな死ぬであろう。

11:6
　そしてエジプト全国に大いなる叫びが起るであろう。このようなことはかつてなく、また、ふたたびないであろう』と。

11:7
　しかし、すべて、イスラエルの人々にむかっては、人にむかっても、獣にむかっても、犬さえその舌を鳴らさないであろう。これによって主がエジプトびととイスラエルびととの間の区別をされるのを、あなたがたは知るであろう。

11:8
　これらのあなたの家来たちは、みな、わたしのもとに下ってきて、ひれ伏して言うであろう、『あなたもあなたに従う民もみな出て行ってください』と。その後、わたしは出て行きます」。彼は激しく怒ってパロのもとから出て行った。

11:9
　主はモーセに言われた、「パロはあなたがたの言うことを聞かないであろう。それゆえ、わたしはエジプトの国に不思議を増し加えるであろう」。

11:10
　モーセとアロンは、すべてこれらの不思議をパロの前に行ったが、主がパロの心をかたくなにされたので、彼はイスラエルの人々をその国から去らせなかった。

+ First Reading: Jonah 3:1-10

1 Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying,

2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.”

3 So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to Yahweh’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across.

4 Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”

5 The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least.

6 The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

7 He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water;

8 but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands.

9 Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?”

10 God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it.

1 Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness.
According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity.
Cleanse me from my sin.

Renew a right spirit within me.

11 Don’t throw me from your presence,
and don’t take your holy Spirit from me.

16 For you don’t delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it.
You have no pleasure in burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.

29 When the multitudes were gathering together to him, he began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign. No sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah, the prophet.

30 For even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will also the Son of Man be to this generation.

31 The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, one greater than Solomon is here.

32 The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, one greater than Jonah is here.

21 Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.”

22 Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days.

23 They didn’t see one another, neither did anyone rise from his place for three days; but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

24 Pharaoh called to Moses, and said, “Go, serve Yahweh. Only let your flocks and your herds stay behind. Let your little ones also go with you.”

25 Moses said, “You must also give into our hand sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to Yahweh our God.

26 Our livestock also shall go with us. Not a hoof shall be left behind, for of it we must take to serve Yahweh our God; and we don’t know with what we must serve Yahweh, until we come there.”

27 But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he wouldn’t let them go.

28 Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me! Be careful to see my face no more; for in the day you see my face you shall die!”

29 Moses said, “You have spoken well. I will see your face again no more.”

1 Yahweh said to Moses, “Yet one plague more will I bring on Pharaoh, and on Egypt; afterwards he will let you go. When he lets you go, he will surely thrust you out altogether.

2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let them ask every man of his neighbor, and every woman of her neighbor, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.”

3 Yahweh gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants, and in the sight of the people.

4 Moses said, “This is what Yahweh says: ‘About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt,

5 and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the female servant who is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of livestock.

6 There shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been, nor shall be any more.

7 But against any of the children of Israel a dog won’t even bark or move its tongue, against man or animal; that you may know that Yahweh makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel.

8 All these your servants shall come down to me, and bow down themselves to me, saying, “Get out, with all the people who follow you”; and after that I will go out.’” He went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

9 Yahweh said to Moses, “Pharaoh won’t listen to you, that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”

10 Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, and Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he didn’t let the children of Israel go out of his land.

　モーセとアロンは主の命じられたようにおこなった。すなわち、彼はパロとその家来たちの目の前で、つえをあげてナイル川の水を打つと、川の水は、ことごとく血に変った。

7:21
　それで川の魚は死に、川は臭くなり、エジプトびとは川の水を飲むことができなくなった。そしてエジプト全国にわたって血があった。

7:22
　エジプトの魔術師らも秘術をもって同じようにおこなった。しかし、主の言われたように、パロの心はかたくなになり、彼らの言うことを聞かなかった。

　パロは身をめぐらして家に入り、またこのことをも心に留めなかった。

　すべてのエジプトびとはナイル川の水が飲めなかったので、飲む水を得ようと、川のまわりを掘った。

it shall not return to me void,
but it shall accomplish that which I please,
and it shall prosper in the thing I sent it to do.

1 Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I have made you as God to Pharaoh; and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.

2 You shall speak all that I command you; and Aaron your brother shall speak to Pharaoh, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.

3 I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.

4 But Pharaoh will not listen to you, and I will lay my hand on Egypt, and bring out my armies, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.

5 The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh, when I stretch out my hand on Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.”

6 Moses and Aaron did so. As Yahweh commanded them, so they did.

7 Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

8 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

9 “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Perform a miracle!’ then you shall tell Aaron, ‘Take your rod, and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it become a serpent.’”

10 Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, as Yahweh had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

11 Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers. They also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same thing with their enchantments.

12 For they each cast down their rods, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.

13 Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he didn’t listen to them; as Yahweh had spoken.

14 Yahweh said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn. He refuses to let the people go.

15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning. Behold, he goes out to the water; and you shall stand by the river’s bank to meet him; and the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand.

16 You shall tell him, ‘Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, “Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness:” and behold, until now you haven’t listened.

17 Thus says Yahweh, “In this you shall know that I am Yahweh. Behold, I will strike with the rod that is in my hand on the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.

18 The fish that are in the river shall die, and the river shall become foul; and the Egyptians shall loathe to drink water from the river.”’”

19 Yahweh said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your rod, and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their streams, and over their pools, and over all their ponds of water, that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.’”

20 Moses and Aaron did so, as Yahweh commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.

21 The fish that were in the river died; and the river became foul, and the Egyptians couldn’t drink water from the river; and the blood was throughout all the land of Egypt.

22 The magicians of Egypt did the same thing with their enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he didn’t listen to them; as Yahweh had spoken.

23 Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he didn’t even take this to heart.

24 All the Egyptians dug around the river for water to drink; for they couldn’t drink of the water of the river.

25 Seven days were fulfilled, after Yahweh had struck the river.

34 Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;

35 for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in.

36 I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink?

38 When did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you?

39 When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’

40 “The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers†, you did it to me.’

41 Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels;

42 for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

44 “Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’

45 “Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’

46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

9 Moses spoke so to the children of Israel, but they didn’t listen to Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

10 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

11 “Go in, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.”

12 Moses spoke before Yahweh, saying, “Behold, the children of Israel haven’t listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me, who am of uncircumcised lips?”

13 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and gave them a command to the children of Israel, and to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

　こうして、彼は獄に捕われている霊どものところに下って行き、宣べ伝えることをされた。

　これらの霊というのは、むかしノアの箱舟が造られていた間、神が寛容をもって待っておられたのに従わなかった者どものことである。その箱舟に乗り込み、水を経て救われたのは、わずかに八名だけであった。

　この水はバプテスマを象徴するものであって、今やあなたがたをも救うのである。それは、イエス・キリストの復活によるのであって、からだの汚れを除くことではなく、明らかな良心を神に願い求めることである。

　その後、モーセとアロンは行ってパロに言った、「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる、『わたしの民を去らせ、荒野で、わたしのために祭をさせなさい』と」。

　パロは言った、「主とはいったい何者か。わたしがその声に聞き従ってイスラエルを去らせなければならないのか。わたしは主を知らない。またイスラエルを去らせはしない」。

5:3
　彼らは言った、「ヘブルびとの神がわたしたちに現れました。どうか、わたしたちを三日の道のりほど荒野に行かせ、わたしたちの神、主に犠牲をささげさせてください。そうしなければ主は疫病か、つるぎをもって、わたしたちを悩まされるからです」。

　エジプトの王は彼らに言った、「モーセとアロンよ、あなたがたは、なぜ民に働きをやめさせようとするのか。自分の労役につくがよい」。

　そこで民を追い使う者たちと、民のかしらたちは出て行って、民に言った、「パロはこう仰せられる、『あなたがたに、わらは与えない。

　自分で行って、見つかる所から、わらを取って来るがよい。しかし働きは少しも減らしてはならない』と」。

　そこで民はエジプトの全地に散って、わらのかわりに、刈り株を集めた。

　追い使う者たちは、彼らをせき立てて言った、「わらがあった時と同じように、あなたがたの働きの、日ごとの分を仕上げなければならない」。

8 God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying,

9 “As for me, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your offspring after you,

10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the livestock, and every animal of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ship, even every animal of the earth.

11 I will establish my covenant with you: All flesh will not be cut off any more by the waters of the flood, neither will there ever again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

12 God said, “This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

13 I set my rainbow in the cloud, and it will be a sign of a covenant between me and the earth.

14 When I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow will be seen in the cloud,

15 and I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh, and the waters will no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

20 who before were disobedient, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, while the ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

21 This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you―not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.

3 They said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Yahweh, our God, lest he fall on us with pestilence, or with the sword.”

4 The king of Egypt said to them, “Why do you, Moses and Aaron, take the people from their work? Get back to your burdens!”

5 Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them rest from their burdens.”

6 The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

7 “You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick, as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.

8 The number of the bricks, which they made before, you require from them. You shall not diminish anything of it, for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

9 Let heavier work be laid on the men, that they may labor therein; and don’t let them pay any attention to lying words.”

10 The taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you straw.

11 Go yourselves, get straw where you can find it, for nothing of your work shall be diminished.’”

12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.

13 The taskmasters were urgent saying, “Fulfill your work quota daily, as when there was straw!”

14 The officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, “Why haven’t you fulfilled your quota both yesterday and today, in making brick as before?”

15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants?

16 No straw is given to your servants, and they tell us, ‘Make brick!’ and behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people.”

17 But he said, “You are idle! You are idle! Therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to Yahweh.’

18 Go therefore now, and work, for no straw shall be given to you, yet you shall deliver the same number of bricks!”

19 The officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble, when it was said, “You shall not diminish anything from your daily quota of bricks!”

20 They met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came out from Pharaoh:

21 and they said to them, “May Yahweh look at you, and judge, because you have made us a stench to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

22 Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, “Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Why is it that you have sent me?

23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people; neither have you delivered your people at all.”

1 Yahweh said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh, for by a strong hand he shall let them go, and by a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land.”

11 and Yahweh will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in dry places, and make strong your bones; and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters don’t fail.

12 Those who shall be of you shall build the old waste places; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

2 Yahweh’s* angel appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

3 Moses said, “I will turn aside now, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.”

4 When Yahweh saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses! Moses!”
He said, “Here I am.”

5 He said, “Don’t come close. Take your sandals off of your feet, for the place you are standing on is holy ground.”

6 Moreover he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”
Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look at God.

7 Yahweh said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

8 I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

9 Now, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to me. Moreover I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

10 Come now therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”

11 Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”

12 He said, “Certainly I will be with you. This will be the token to you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

13 Moses said to God, “Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you;’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What should I tell them?”

14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and he said, “You shall tell the children of Israel this: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

15 God said moreover to Moses, “You shall tell the children of Israel this, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.

16 Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and tell them, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt;

19 I know that the king of Egypt won’t give you permission to go, no, not by a mighty hand.

+ First Reading: Isaiah 58:1-9a

1 “Cry aloud, don’t spare, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare to my people their disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins.

2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and didn’t forsake the ordinance of their God, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.

3 ‘Why have we fasted,’ say they, ‘and you don’t see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge?’
“Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exact all your labors.

4 Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness: you don’t fast this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?

6 “Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

7 Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?

8 Then your light shall break out as the morning, and your healing shall spring out speedily; and your righteousness shall go before you; Yahweh’s glory shall be your rear guard.

9a Then you shall call, and Yahweh will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’

+ Today's Reading: Exodus 2:1-22

1 A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.

2 The woman conceived, and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.

3 When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.

4 His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.

5 Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her handmaid to get it.

6 She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”

8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.”
The maiden went and called the child’s mother.

9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.”
The woman took the child, and nursed it.

10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses,* and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

11 In those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers, and looked at their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.

12 He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

13 He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”

14 He said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?”
Moses was afraid, and said, “Surely this thing is known.”

15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.

16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

17 The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

18 When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, “How is it that you have returned so early today?”

19 They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.”

20 He said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”

21 Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.

22 She bore a son, and he named him Gershom,† for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”

*2:10: “Moses” sounds like the Hebrew for “draw out”.

†2:22: “Gershom” sounds like the Hebrew for “an alien there”.

　それから、みんなの者に言われた、「だれでもわたしについてきたいと思うなら、自分を捨て、日々自分の十字架を負うて、わたしに従ってきなさい。

9:24
　自分の命を救おうと思う者はそれを失い、わたしのために自分の命を失う者は、それを救うであろう。

9:25
　人が全世界をもうけても、自分自身を失いまたは損したら、なんの得になろうか。

+ First Reading: Deuteronomy 30:15-20

15 Behold, I have set before you this day life and prosperity, and death and evil.

16 For I command you this day to love Yahweh your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments, his statutes, and his ordinances, that you may live and multiply, and that Yahweh your God may bless you in the land where you go in to possess it.
17 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;

18 I denounce to you this day, that you will surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you pass over the Jordan to go in to possess it.

19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your descendants;

20 to love Yahweh your God, to obey his voice, and to cling to him; for he is your life, and the length of your days; that you may dwell in the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

5 All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.

7 The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.

9 He said to his people, “Behold,* the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.

10 Come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies, and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”

11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They were grieved because of the children of Israel.

13 The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,

14 and they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.

15 The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,

16 and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool; if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

17 But the midwives feared God,† and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.

18 The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and have saved the boys alive?”

19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous, and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

20 God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.

21 Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

22 Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

*1:9: “Behold”, from “??????”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

†1:17: The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim”.

　自分の義を、見られるために人の前で行わないように、注意しなさい。もし、そうしないと、天にいますあなたがたの父から報いを受けることがないであろう。

　だから、施しをする時には、偽善者たちが人にほめられるため会堂や町の中でするように、自分の前でラッパを吹きならすな。よく言っておくが、彼らはその報いを受けてしまっている。

6:3
　あなたは施しをする場合、右の手のしていることを左の手に知らせるな。

6:4
　それは、あなたのする施しが隠れているためである。すると、隠れた事を見ておられるあなたの父は、報いてくださるであろう。

6:5
　また祈る時には、偽善者たちのようにするな。彼らは人に見せようとして、会堂や大通りのつじに立って祈ることを好む。よく言っておくが、彼らはその報いを受けてしまっている。

　見よ、あなたがたの断食するのは、ただ争いと、いさかいのため、また悪のこぶしをもって人を打つためだ。きょう、あなたがたのなす断食は、その声を上に聞えさせるものではない。

　わたしが選ぶところの断食は、悪のなわをほどき、くびきのひもを解き、しえたげられる者を放ち去らせ、すべてのくびきを折るなどの事ではないか。

　また飢えた者に、あなたのパンを分け与え、さすらえる貧しい者を、あなたの家に入れ、裸の者を見て、これを着せ、自分の骨肉に身を隠さないなどの事ではないか。

+ First Reading: Joel 2:12-18

12 “Yet even now,” says Yahweh, “turn to me with all your heart,
and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.”

13 Tear your heart, and not your garments,
and turn to Yahweh, your God;
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness,
and relents from sending calamity.

14 Who knows? He may turn and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
even a meal offering and a drink offering to Yahweh, your God.

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion!
Sanctify a fast.
Call a solemn assembly.

16 Gather the people.
Sanctify the assembly.
Assemble the elders.
Gather the children, and those who nurse from breasts.
Let the bridegroom go out of his room,
and the bride out of her room.

17 Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh, weep between the porch and the altar,
and let them say, “Spare your people, Yahweh,
and don’t give your heritage to reproach,
that the nations should rule over them.

‘Where is their God?’”

“At an acceptable time I listened to you,

1 “Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

2 Therefore when you do merciful deeds, don’t sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.

3 But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does,

4 so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

5 “When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.

6 But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

16 “Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.

17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;

18 so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

1 “Cry aloud, don’t spare, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare to my people their disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins.

2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and didn’t forsake the ordinance of their God, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.

3 ‘Why have we fasted,’ say they, ‘and you don’t see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge?’
“Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exact all your labors.

4 Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness: you don’t fast this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?

6 “Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

7 Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?

8 Then your light shall break out as the morning, and your healing shall spring out speedily; and your righteousness shall go before you; Yahweh’s glory shall be your rear guard.

9 Then you shall call, and Yahweh will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
“If you take away from your midst the yoke, the putting out of the finger, and speaking wickedly;

10 and if you draw out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul: then your light shall rise in darkness, and your obscurity be as the noonday;

11 and Yahweh will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in dry places, and make strong your bones; and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters don’t fail.

12 Those who shall be of you shall build the old waste places; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

　それから彼らはそこを立ち去り、ガリラヤをとおって行ったが、イエスは人に気づかれるのを好まれなかった。

　それは、イエスが弟子たちに教えて、「人の子は人々の手にわたされ、彼らに殺され、殺されてから三日の後によみがえるであろう」と言っておられたからである。

9:32
　しかし、彼らはイエスの言われたことを悟らず、また尋ねるのを恐れていた。

9:33
　それから彼らはカペナウムにきた。そして家におられるとき、イエスは弟子たちに尋ねられた、「あなたがたは途中で何を論じていたのか」。

9:34
　彼らは黙っていた。それは途中で、だれが一ばん偉いかと、互に論じ合っていたからである。

9:35
　そこで、イエスはすわって十二弟子を呼び、そして言われた、「だれでも一ばん先になろうと思うならば、一ばんあとになり、みんなに仕える者とならねばならない」。

　そして、ひとりの幼な子をとりあげて、彼らのまん中に立たせ、それを抱いて言われた。

　あなたがたの中の戦いや争いは、いったい、どこから起るのか。それはほかではない。あなたがたの肢体の中で相戦う欲情からではないか。

　あなたがたは、むさぼるが得られない。そこで人殺しをする。熱望するが手に入れることができない。そこで争い戦う。あなたがたは、求めないから得られないのだ。

　求めても与えられないのは、快楽のために使おうとして、悪い求め方をするからだ。

　不貞のやからよ。世を友とするのは、神への敵対であることを、知らないか。おおよそ世の友となろうと思う者は、自らを神の敵とするのである。

　それとも、「神は、わたしたちの内に住まわせた霊を、ねたむほどに愛しておられる」と聖書に書いてあるのは、むなしい言葉だと思うのか。

　しかし神は、いや増しに恵みを賜う。であるから、「神は高ぶる者をしりぞけ、へりくだる者に恵みを賜う」とある。

　そういうわけだから、神に従いなさい。そして、悪魔に立ちむかいなさい。そうすれば、彼はあなたがたから逃げ去るであろう。

　神に近づきなさい。そうすれば、神はあなたがたに近づいて下さるであろう。罪人どもよ、手をきよめよ。二心の者どもよ、心を清くせよ。

　しかるに、神は感謝すべきかな。神はいつもわたしたちをキリストの凱旋に伴い行き、わたしたちをとおしてキリストを知る知識のかおりを、至る所に放って下さるのである。

　わたしたちは、救われる者にとっても滅びる者にとっても、神に対するキリストのかおりである。

　後者にとっては、死から死に至らせるかおりであり、前者にとっては、いのちからいのちに至らせるかおりである。いったい、このような任務に、だれが耐え得ようか。

　しかし、わたしたちは、多くの人のように神の言を売物にせず、真心をこめて、神につかわされた者として神のみまえで、キリストにあって語るのである。

　もちろん、自分自身で事を定める力が自分にある、と言うのではない。わたしたちのこうした力は、神からきている。

+ First Reading: James 4:1-10

1 Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members?

2 You lust, and don’t have. You kill, covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask.

3 You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures.

4 You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”?

6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”☆

7 Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

16 to the one a stench from death to death; to the other a sweet aroma from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?

17 For we are not as so many, peddling the word of God. But as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, we speak in Christ.

3:1 Are we beginning again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as do some, letters of commendation to you or from you?

2 You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men;

3 being revealed that you are a letter of Christ, served by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tablets of stone, but in tablets that are hearts of flesh.

4 Such confidence we have through Christ toward God;

5 not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God;

6 who also made us sufficient as servants of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

　さて、彼らがほかの弟子たちの所にきて見ると、大ぜいの群衆が弟子たちを取り囲み、そして律法学者たちが彼らと論じ合っていた。

9:15
　群衆はみな、すぐイエスを見つけて、非常に驚き、駆け寄ってきて、あいさつをした。

9:16
　イエスが彼らに、「あなたがたは彼らと何を論じているのか」と尋ねられると、

9:17
　群衆のひとりが答えた、「先生、おしの霊につかれているわたしのむすこを、こちらに連れて参りました。

9:18
　霊がこのむすこにとりつきますと、どこででも彼を引き倒し、それから彼はあわを吹き、歯をくいしばり、からだをこわばらせてしまいます。それでお弟子たちに、この霊を追い出してくださるように願いましたが、できませんでした」。

9:19
　イエスは答えて言われた、「ああ、なんという不信仰な時代であろう。いつまで、わたしはあなたがたと一緒におられようか。いつまで、あなたがたに我慢ができようか。その子をわたしの所に連れてきなさい」。

　そこで人々は、その子をみもとに連れてきた。霊がイエスを見るや否や、その子をひきつけさせたので、子は地に倒れ、あわを吹きながらころげまわった。

　そこで、イエスが父親に「いつごろから、こんなになったのか」と尋ねられると、父親は答えた、「幼い時からです。

　霊はたびたび、この子を火の中、水の中に投げ入れて、殺そうとしました。しかしできますれば、わたしどもをあわれんでお助けください」。

　イエスは彼に言われた、「もしできれば、と言うのか。信ずる者には、どんな事でもできる」。

　その子の父親はすぐ叫んで言った、「信じます。不信仰なわたしを、お助けください」。

　イエスは群衆が駆け寄って来るのをごらんになって、けがれた霊をしかって言われた、「おしとつんぼの霊よ、わたしがおまえに命じる。この子から出て行け。二度と、はいって来るな」。

　すると霊は叫び声をあげ、激しく引きつけさせて出て行った。その子は死人のようになったので、多くの人は、死んだのだと言った。

　しかし、イエスが手を取って起されると、その子は立ち上がった。

　家にはいられたとき、弟子たちはひそかにお尋ねした、「わたしたちは、どうして霊を追い出せなかったのですか」。

　すると、イエスは言われた、「このたぐいは、祈によらなければ、どうしても追い出すことはできない」。

★ヤコブの手紙(3:13-18)

　あなたがたのうちで、知恵があり物わかりのよい人は、だれであるか。その人は、知恵にかなう柔和な行いをしていることを、よい生活によって示すがよい。

　しかし、もしあなたがたの心の中に、苦々しいねたみや党派心をいだいているのなら、誇り高ぶってはならない。また、真理にそむいて偽ってはならない。

3:15
　そのような知恵は、上から下ってきたものではなくて、地につくもの、肉に属するもの、悪魔的なものである。

3:16
　ねたみと党派心とのあるところには、混乱とあらゆる忌むべき行為とがある。

　しかし上からの知恵は、第一に清く、次に平和、寛容、温順であり、あわれみと良い実とに満ち、かたより見ず、偽りがない。

　義の実は、平和を造り出す人たちによって、平和のうちにまかれるものである。

　この確信をもって、わたしたちはもう一度恵みを得させたいので、まずあなたがたの所に行き、

　それからそちらを通ってマケドニヤにおもむき、そして再びマケドニヤからあなたがたの所に帰り、あなたがたの見送りを受けてユダヤに行く計画を立てたのである。

1:17
　この計画を立てたのは、軽率なことであったであろうか。それとも、自分の計画を肉の思いによって計画したため、わたしの「しかり、しかり」が同時に「否、否」であったのだろうか。

1:18
　神の真実にかけて言うが、あなたがたに対するわたしの言葉は、「しかり」と同時に「否」というようなものではない。

1:19
　なぜなら、わたしたち、すなわち、わたしとシルワノとテモテとが、あなたがたに宣べ伝えた神の子キリスト・イエスは、「しかり」となると同時に「否」となったのではない。そうではなく、「しかり」がイエスにおいて実現されたのである。

　なぜなら、神の約束はことごとく、彼において「しかり」となったからである。だから、わたしたちは、彼によって「アァメン」と唱えて、神に栄光を帰するのである。

　あなたがたと共にわたしたちを、キリストのうちに堅くささえ、油をそそいで下さったのは、神である。

　神はまた、わたしたちに証印をおし、その保証として、わたしたちの心に御霊を賜わったのである。

　わたしたちは、あなたがたの信仰を支配する者ではなく、あなたがたの喜びのために共に働いている者にすぎない。あなたがたは、信仰に堅く立っているからである。

　そこでわたしは、あなたがたの所に再び悲しみをもって行くことはすまいと、決心したのである。

　もしあなたがたを悲しませるとすれば、わたしが悲しませているその人以外に、だれがわたしを喜ばせてくれるのか。

　このような事を書いたのは、わたしが行く時、わたしを喜ばせてくれるはずの人々から、悲しい思いをさせられたくないためである。わたし自身の喜びはあなたがた全体の喜びであることを、あなたがたすべてについて確信しているからである。

　わたしは大きな患難と心の憂いの中から、多くの涙をもってあなたがたに書きおくった。それは、あなたがたを悲しませるためではなく、あなたがたに対してあふれるばかりにいだいているわたしの愛を、知ってもらうためであった。

　しかし、もしだれかが人を悲しませたとすれば、それはわたしを悲しませたのではなく、控え目に言うが、ある程度、あなたがた一同を悲しませたのである。

　その人にとっては、多数の者から受けたあの処罰でもう十分なのだから、

　あなたがたはむしろ彼をゆるし、また慰めてやるべきである。そうしないと、その人はますます深い悲しみに沈むかも知れない。

　そこでわたしは、彼に対して愛を示すように、あなたがたに勧める。

2:9
　わたしが書きおくったのも、あなたがたがすべての事について従順であるかどうかを、ためすためにほかならなかった。

2:10
　もしあなたがたが、何かのことについて人をゆるすなら、わたしもまたゆるそう。そして、もしわたしが何かのことでゆるしたとすれば、それは、あなたがたのためにキリストのみまえでゆるしたのである。

2:11
　そうするのは、サタンに欺かれることのないためである。わたしたちは、彼の策略を知らないわけではない。

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.

14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth.

15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.

16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

14 Coming to the disciples, he saw a great multitude around them, and scribes questioning them.

17 One of the multitude answered, “Teacher, I brought to you my son, who has a mute spirit;

18 and wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth, and wastes away. I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they weren’t able.”

19 He answered him, “Unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me.”

20 They brought him to him, and when he saw him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground, wallowing and foaming at the mouth.

21 He asked his father, “How long has it been since this has come to him?”
He said, “From childhood.

22 Often it has cast him both into the fire and into the water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us, and help us.”

23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

24 Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe. Help my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a multitude came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!”

26 Having cried out, and convulsed greatly, it came out of him. The boy became like one dead; so much that most of them said, “He is dead.”

27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and raised him up; and he arose.

28 When he had come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?”

29 He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing, except by prayer and fasting.”

19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, by me, Silvanus, and Timothy, was not “Yes and no,” but in him is “Yes.”

20 For however many are the promises of God, in him is the “Yes.” Therefore also through him is the “Amen”, to the glory of God through us.

21 Now he who establishes us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;

22 who also sealed us, and gave us the down payment of the Spirit in our hearts.

23 But I call God for a witness to my soul, that I didn’t come to Corinth to spare you.

24 Not that we control your faith, but are fellow workers with you for your joy. For you stand firm in faith.

2:1 But I determined this for myself, that I would not come to you again in sorrow.

2 For if I make you sorry, then who will make me glad but he who is made sorry by me?

3 And I wrote this very thing to you, so that, when I came, I wouldn’t have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy would be shared by all of you.

4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you should be made sorry, but that you might know the love that I have so abundantly for you.

5 But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I not press too heavily) to you all.

6 Sufficient to such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the many;

7 so that on the contrary you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his excessive sorrow.

8 Therefore I beg you to confirm your love toward him.

9 For to this end I also wrote, that I might know the proof of you, whether you are obedient in all things.

10 Now I also forgive whomever you forgive anything. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ,

11 that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his schemes.

　すると、人々がひとりの中風の者を四人の人に運ばせて、イエスのところに連れてきた。

　ところが、群衆のために近寄ることができないので、イエスのおられるあたりの屋根をはぎ、穴をあけて、中風の者を寝かせたまま、床をつりおろした。

　イエスは彼らの信仰を見て、中風の者に、「子よ、あなたの罪はゆるされた」と言われた。

　ところが、そこに幾人かの律法学者がすわっていて、心の中で論じた、

　「ユダヤ人の王としてお生れになったかたは、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東の方でその星を見たので、そのかたを拝みにきました」。

　ヘロデ王はこのことを聞いて不安を感じた。エルサレムの人々もみな、同様であった。

　そこで王は祭司長たちと民の律法学者たちとを全部集めて、キリストはどこに生れるのかと、彼らに問いただした。

　彼らは王に言った、「それはユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者がこうしるしています、

　神の御旨によりキリスト・イエスの使徒となったパウロと、兄弟テモテとから、コリントにある神の教会、ならびにアカヤ全土にいるすべての聖徒たちへ。

　わたしたちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。

1:3
　ほむべきかな、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの父なる神、あわれみ深き父、慰めに満ちたる神。

1:4
　神は、いかなる患難の中にいる時でもわたしたちを慰めて下さり、また、わたしたち自身も、神に慰めていただくその慰めをもって、あらゆる患難の中にある人々を慰めることができるようにして下さるのである。

　それは、キリストの苦難がわたしたちに満ちあふれているように、わたしたちの受ける慰めもまた、キリストによって満ちあふれているからである。

9 Which is easier, to tell the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Arise, and take up your bed, and walk?’

10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”― he said to the paralytic ―

11 “I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house.”

12 He arose, and immediately took up the mat, and went out in front of them all; so that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

6 But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer.

7 Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that, since you are partakers of the sufferings, so also are you of the comfort.

　六日の後、イエスは、ただペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネだけを連れて、高い山に登られた。ところが、彼らの目の前でイエスの姿が変り、

　その衣は真白く輝き、どんな布さらしでも、それほどに白くすることはできないくらいになった。

9:4
　すると、エリヤがモーセと共に彼らに現れて、イエスと語り合っていた。

9:5
　ペテロはイエスにむかって言った、「先生、わたしたちがここにいるのは、すばらしいことです。それで、わたしたちは小屋を三つ建てましょう。一つはあなたのために、一つはモーセのために、一つはエリヤのために」。

9:6
　そう言ったのは、みんなの者が非常に恐れていたので、ペテロは何を言ってよいか、わからなかったからである。

9:7
　すると、雲がわき起って彼らをおおった。そして、その雲の中から声があった、「これはわたしの愛する子である。これに聞け」。

　彼らは急いで見まわしたが、もはやだれも見えず、ただイエスだけが、自分たちと一緒におられた。

　わたしたちは皆、多くのあやまちを犯すものである。もし、言葉の上であやまちのない人があれば、そういう人は、全身をも制御することのできる完全な人である。

　馬を御するために、その口にくつわをはめるなら、その全身を引きまわすことができる。

3:4
　また船を見るがよい。船体が非常に大きく、また激しい風に吹きまくられても、ごく小さなかじ一つで、操縦者の思いのままに運転される。

　それと同じく、舌は小さな器官ではあるが、よく大言壮語する。見よ、ごく小さな火でも、非常に大きな森を燃やすではないか。

　舌は火である。不義の世界である。舌は、わたしたちの器官の一つとしてそなえられたものであるが、全身を汚し、生存の車輪を燃やし、自らは地獄の火で焼かれる。

　あらゆる種類の獣、鳥、這うもの、海の生物は、すべて人類に制せられるし、また制せられてきた。

　ところが、舌を制しうる人は、ひとりもいない。それは、制しにくい悪であって、死の毒に満ちている。

　わたしたちは、この舌で父なる主をさんびし、また、その同じ舌で、神にかたどって造られた人間をのろっている。

　同じ口から、さんびとのろいとが出て来る。わたしの兄弟たちよ。このような事は、あるべきでない。

1 Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

2 For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

3 Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

4 Behold,* the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.

5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!

6 And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.†

7 For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.

8 But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

10 Out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

7 A cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”

8 Suddenly looking around, they saw no one with them any more, except Jesus only.

9 As they were coming down from the mountain, he commanded them that they should tell no one what things they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

10 They kept this saying to themselves, questioning what the “rising from the dead” meant.

11 They asked him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

12 He said to them, “Elijah indeed comes first, and restores all things. How is it written about the Son of Man, that he should suffer many things and be despised?

13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they have also done to him whatever they wanted to, even as it is written about him.”

14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?

15 And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,

16 and one of you tells them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled”; and yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?

17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.

18 Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.

19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.

20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?

21 Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected;

1 My brothers, don’t hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.

2 For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue,* and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in;

3 and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, “Sit here in a good place”; and you tell the poor man, “Stand there,” or “Sit by my footstool”;

4 haven’t you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

5 Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?

7 Don’t they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?

8 However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,”☆ you do well.

9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.

3 We are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers,* even as it is appropriate, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of each and every one of you towards one another abounds;

4 so that we ourselves boast about you in the assemblies of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which you endure.

5 This is an obvious sign of the righteous judgment of God, to the end that you may be counted worthy of the Kingdom of God, for which you also suffer.

6 Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you,

7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire,

8 giving vengeance to those who don’t know God, and to those who don’t obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus,

9 who will pay the penalty: eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

10 when he comes to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired among all those who have believed (because our testimony to you was believed) in that day.

11 To this end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire of goodness and work of faith, with power;

　そのうちに、彼らはベツサイダに着いた。すると人々が、ひとりの盲人を連れてきて、さわってやっていただきたいとお願いした。

　イエスはこの盲人の手をとって、村の外に連れ出し、その両方の目につばきをつけ、両手を彼に当てて、「何か見えるか」と尋ねられた。

8:24
　すると彼は顔を上げて言った、「人が見えます。木のように見えます。歩いているようです」。

8:25
　それから、イエスが再び目の上に両手を当てられると、盲人は見つめているうちに、なおってきて、すべてのものがはっきりと見えだした。

　そこでイエスは、「村にはいってはいけない」と言って、彼を家に帰された。

　だから、すべての汚れや、はなはだしい悪を捨て去って、心に植えつけられている御言を、すなおに受け入れなさい。御言には、あなたがたのたましいを救う力がある。

　そして、御言を行う人になりなさい。おのれを欺いて、ただ聞くだけの者となってはいけない。

+ First Reading: James 1:19-27

19 So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

20 for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.

21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.†

22 But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror;

24 for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

25 But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.

26 If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless.

27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

4 But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.

5 You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness,

6 so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober.

7 For those who sleep, sleep in the night, and those who are drunk are drunk in the night.

8 But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

9 For God didn’t appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

11 Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you,

13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake.
Be at peace among yourselves.

14 We exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the faint-hearted, support the weak, be patient toward all.

15 See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which is good, for one another, and for all.

16 Rejoice always.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

19 Don’t quench the Spirit.

20 Don’t despise prophesies.

21 Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.

22 Abstain from every form of evil.

23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it.

25 Brothers, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

27 I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the holy brothers.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
