23:1
　そのときイエスは、群衆と弟子たちとに語って言われた、

23:2
　「律法学者とパリサイ人とは、モーセの座にすわっている。

23:3
　だから、彼らがあなたがたに言うことは、みな守って実行しなさい。しかし、彼らのすることには、ならうな。彼らは言うだけで、実行しないから。

23:4
　また、重い荷物をくくって人々の肩にのせるが、それを動かすために、自分では指一本も貸そうとはしない。

23:5
　そのすることは、すべて人に見せるためである。すなわち、彼らは経札を幅広くつくり、その衣のふさを大きくし、

23:6
　また、宴会の上座、会堂の上席を好み、

23:7
　広場であいさつされることや、人々から先生と呼ばれることを好んでいる。

23:8
　しかし、あなたがたは先生と呼ばれてはならない。あなたがたの先生は、ただひとりであって、あなたがたはみな兄弟なのだから。

23:9
　また、地上のだれをも、父と呼んではならない。あなたがたの父はただひとり、すなわち、天にいます父である。

23:10
　また、あなたがたは教師と呼ばれてはならない。あなたがたの教師はただひとり、すなわち、キリストである。

23:11
　そこで、あなたがたのうちでいちばん偉い者は、仕える人でなければならない。

23:12
　だれでも自分を高くする者は低くされ、自分を低くする者は高くされるであろう。

★イザヤ書(1:10、16-20)

1:10
　あなたがたソドムのつかさたちよ、主の言葉を聞け。あなたがたゴモラの民よ、われわれの神の教に耳を傾けよ。

1:16
　あなたがたは身を洗って、清くなり、わたしの目の前からあなたがたの悪い行いを除き、悪を行うことをやめ、

1:17
　善を行うことをならい、公平を求め、しえたげる者を戒め、みなしごを正しく守り、寡婦の訴えを弁護せよ。

1:18
　主は言われる、さあ、われわれは互に論じよう。たといあなたがたの罪は緋のようであっても、雪のように白くなるのだ。紅のように赤くても、羊の毛のようになるのだ。

1:19
　もし、あなたがたが快く従うなら、地の良き物を食べることができる。

1:20
　しかし、あなたがたが拒みそむくならば、つるぎで滅ぼされる」。これは主がその口で語られたことである。

　わたしがあなたを責めるのは、あなたのいけにえのゆえではない。あなたの燔祭はいつもわたしの前にある。

　しかし神は悪しき者に言われる、「あなたはなんの権利があってわたしの定めを述べ、わたしの契約を口にするのか。

　あなたは教を憎み、わたしの言葉を捨て去った。

　あなたがこれらの事をしたのを、わたしが黙っていたので、あなたはわたしを全く自分とひとしい者と思った。しかしわたしはあなたを責め、あなたの目の前にその罪をならべる。

　感謝のいけにえをささげる者はわたしをあがめる。自分のおこないを慎む者にはわたしは神の救を示す」。


◆今日の読書：出エジプト記(16:1-18、35)

16:1
　イスラエルの人々の全会衆はエリムを出発し、エジプトの地を出て二か月目の十五日に、エリムとシナイとの間にあるシンの荒野にきたが、

16:2
　その荒野でイスラエルの人々の全会衆は、モーセとアロンにつぶやいた。

16:3
　イスラエルの人々は彼らに言った、「われわれはエジプトの地で、肉のなべのかたわらに座し、飽きるほどパンを食べていた時に、主の手にかかって死んでいたら良かった。あなたがたは、われわれをこの荒野に導き出して、全会衆を餓死させようとしている」。

16:4
　そのとき主はモーセに言われた、「見よ、わたしはあなたがたのために、天からパンを降らせよう。民は出て日々の分を日ごとに集めなければならない。こうして彼らがわたしの律法に従うかどうかを試みよう。

16:5
　六日目には、彼らが取り入れたものを調理すると、それは日ごとに集めるものの二倍あるであろう」。

16:6
　モーセとアロンは、イスラエルのすべての人々に言った、「夕暮には、あなたがたは、エジプトの地からあなたがたを導き出されたのが、主であることを知るであろう。

16:7
　また、朝には、あなたがたは主の栄光を見るであろう。主はあなたがたが主にむかってつぶやくのを聞かれたからである。あなたがたは、いったいわれわれを何者として、われわれにむかってつぶやくのか」。

16:8
　モーセはまた言った、「主は夕暮にはあなたがたに肉を与えて食べさせ、朝にはパンを与えて飽き足らせられるであろう。主はあなたがたが、主にむかってつぶやくつぶやきを聞かれたからである。いったいわれわれは何者なのか。あなたがたのつぶやくのは、われわれにむかってでなく、主にむかってである」。

16:9
　モーセはアロンに言った、「イスラエルの人々の全会衆に言いなさい、『あなたがたは主の前に近づきなさい。主があなたがたのつぶやきを聞かれたからである』と」。

16:10
　それでアロンがイスラエルの人々の全会衆に語ったとき、彼らが荒野の方を望むと、見よ、主の栄光が雲のうちに現れていた。

16:11
　主はモーセに言われた、

16:12
　「わたしはイスラエルの人々のつぶやきを聞いた。彼らに言いなさい、『あなたがたは夕には肉を食べ、朝にはパンに飽き足りるであろう。そうしてわたしがあなたがたの神、主であることを知るであろう』と」。

16:13
　夕べになると、うずらが飛んできて宿営をおおった。また、朝になると、宿営の周囲に露が降りた。

16:14
　その降りた露がかわくと、荒野の面には、薄いうろこのようなものがあり、ちょうど地に結ぶ薄い霜のようであった。

16:15
　イスラエルの人々はそれを見て互に言った、「これはなんであろう」。彼らはそれがなんであるのか知らなかったからである。モーセは彼らに言った、「これは主があなたがたの食物として賜わるパンである。

16:16
　主が命じられるのはこうである、『あなたがたは、おのおのその食べるところに従ってそれを集め、あなたがたの人数に従って、ひとり一オメルずつ、おのおのその天幕におるもののためにそれを取りなさい』と」。

16:17
　イスラエルの人々はそのようにして、ある者は多く、ある者は少なく集めた。

16:18
　しかし、オメルでそれを計ってみると、多く集めた者にも余らず、少なく集めた者にも不足しなかった。おのおのその食べるところに従って集めていた。

16:35
　イスラエルの人々は人の住む地に着くまで四十年の間マナを食べた。すなわち、彼らはカナンの地の境に至るまでマナを食べた。

10 Hear the word of Yahweh, you rulers of Sodom!
Listen to the law of our God†, you people of Gomorrah!

16 Wash yourselves, make yourself clean.
Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes.
Cease to do evil.

17 Learn to do well.
Seek justice.
Relieve the oppressed.
Judge the fatherless.
Plead for the widow.”

18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” says Yahweh:
“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.
Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

19 If you are willing and obedient,
you shall eat the good of the land;

20 but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword;
for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it.”

*1:2: “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations.

1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,

2 saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat.

3 All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.

4 For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries *broad, enlarge the fringes†of their garments,

6 and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,

7 the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.

8 But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.

9 Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.

10 Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.

11 But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.

12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

*23:5: phylacteries (tefillin in Hebrew) are small leather pouches that some Jewish men wear on their forehead and arm in prayer. They are used to carry a small scroll with some Scripture in it. See Deuteronomy 6:8.

+ Today's Reading: Exodus 16:1-18、35

1 They took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

2 The whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness;

3 and the children of Israel said to them, “We wish that we had died by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots, when we ate our fill of bread, for you have brought us out into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

4 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from the sky for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law, or not.

5 It shall come to pass on the sixth day, that they shall prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”

6 Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, “At evening, then you shall know that Yahweh has brought you out from the land of Egypt;

7 and in the morning, then you shall see the glory of Yahweh; because he hears your murmurings against Yahweh. Who are we, that you murmur against us?”

8 Moses said, “Now Yahweh shall give you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to satisfy you; because Yahweh hears your murmurings which you murmur against him. And who are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against Yahweh.”

9 Moses said to Aaron, “Tell all the congregation of the children of Israel, ‘Come near before Yahweh, for he has heard your murmurings.’”

10 It happened, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of Yahweh appeared in the cloud.

11 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

12 “I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘At evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread: and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God.’”

13 It happened at evening that quail came up and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay around the camp.

14 When the dew that lay had gone, behold, on the surface of the wilderness was a small round thing, small as the frost on the ground.

15 When the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, “What is it?” For they didn’t know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread which Yahweh has given you to eat.”

16 This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded: “Gather of it everyone according to his eating; an omer* a head, according to the number of your persons, you shall take it, every man for those who are in his tent.”

17 The children of Israel did so, and gathered some more, some less.

18 When they measured it with an omer, he who gathered much had nothing over, and he who gathered little had no lack. They gathered every man according to his eating.

35 The children of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. They ate the manna until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan.

*16:16: An omer is about 2.2 litres or about 2.3 quarts
