★ルカによる福音(16:19-31)

16:19
　ある金持がいた。彼は紫の衣や細布を着て、毎日ぜいたくに遊び暮していた。

16:20
　ところが、ラザロという貧乏人が全身でき物でおおわれて、この金持の玄関の前にすわり、

16:21
　その食卓から落ちるもので飢えをしのごうと望んでいた。その上、犬がきて彼のでき物をなめていた。

16:22
　この貧乏人がついに死に、御使たちに連れられてアブラハムのふところに送られた。金持も死んで葬られた。

16:23
　そして黄泉にいて苦しみながら、目をあげると、アブラハムとそのふところにいるラザロとが、はるかに見えた。

16:24
　そこで声をあげて言った、『父、アブラハムよ、わたしをあわれんでください。ラザロをおつかわしになって、その指先を水でぬらし、わたしの舌を冷やさせてください。わたしはこの火炎の中で苦しみもだえています』。

16:25
　アブラハムが言った、『子よ、思い出すがよい。あなたは生前よいものを受け、ラザロの方は悪いものを受けた。しかし今ここでは、彼は慰められ、あなたは苦しみもだえている。

16:26
　そればかりか、わたしたちとあなたがたとの間には大きな淵がおいてあって、こちらからあなたがたの方へ渡ろうと思ってもできないし、そちらからわたしたちの方へ越えて来ることもできない』。

16:27
　そこで金持が言った、『父よ、ではお願いします。わたしの父の家へラザロをつかわしてください。

16:28
　わたしに五人の兄弟がいますので、こんな苦しい所へ来ることがないように、彼らに警告していただきたいのです』。

16:29
　アブラハムは言った、『彼らにはモーセと預言者とがある。それに聞くがよかろう』。

16:30
　金持が言った、『いえいえ、父アブラハムよ、もし死人の中からだれかが兄弟たちのところへ行ってくれましたら、彼らは悔い改めるでしょう』。

16:31
　アブラハムは言った、『もし彼らがモーセと預言者とに耳を傾けないなら、死人の中からよみがえってくる者があっても、彼らはその勧めを聞き入れはしないであろう』」。

★エレミヤ書(17:5-10)

17:5
　主はこう言われる、「おおよそ人を頼みとし肉なる者を自分の腕とし、その心が主を離れている人は、のろわれる。

17:6
　彼は荒野に育つ小さい木のように、何も良いことの来るのを見ない。荒野の、干上がった所に住み、人の住まない塩地にいる。

17:7
　おおよそ主にたより、主を頼みとする人はさいわいである。

17:8
　彼は水のほとりに植えた木のようで、その根を川にのばし、暑さにあっても恐れることはない。その葉は常に青く、ひでりの年にも憂えることなく、絶えず実を結ぶ」。

17:9
　心はよろずの物よりも偽るもので、はなはだしく悪に染まっている。だれがこれを、よく知ることができようか。

17:10
　「主であるわたしは心を探り、思いを試みる。おのおのに、その道にしたがい、その行いの実によって報いをするためである」。


★Psalm:詩編(1:1-4, 6)

1:1
　悪しき者のはかりごとに歩まず、罪びとの道に立たず、あざける者の座にすわらぬ人はさいわいである。

1:2
　このような人は主のおきてをよろこび、昼も夜もそのおきてを思う。

1:3
　このような人は流れのほとりに植えられた木の時が来ると実を結び、その葉もしぼまないように、そのなすところは皆栄える。

1:4
　悪しき者はそうでない、風の吹き去るもみがらのようだ。

1:6
　主は正しい者の道を知られる。しかし、悪しき者の道は滅びる。


◆今日の読書：出エジプト記　(18:13-27)

18:13
　あくる日モーセは座して民をさばいたが、民は朝から晩まで、モーセのまわりに立っていた。

18:14
　モーセのしゅうとは、彼がすべて民にしていることを見て、言った、「あなたが民にしているこのことはなんですか。あなたひとりが座し、民はみな朝から晩まで、あなたのまわりに立っているのはなぜですか」。

18:15
　モーセはしゅうとに言った、「民が神に伺おうとして、わたしの所に来るからです。

18:16
　彼らは事があれば、わたしの所にきます。わたしは相互の間をさばいて、神の定めと判決を知らせるのです」。

18:17
　モーセのしゅうとは彼に言った、「あなたのしていることは良くない。

18:18
　あなたも、あなたと一緒にいるこの民も、必ず疲れ果てるであろう。このことはあなたに重過ぎるから、ひとりですることができない。

18:19
　今わたしの言うことを聞きなさい。わたしはあなたに助言する。どうか神があなたと共にいますように。あなたは民のために神の前にいて、事件を神に述べなさい。

18:20
　あなたは彼らに定めと判決を教え、彼らの歩むべき道と、なすべき事を彼らに知らせなさい。

18:21
　また、すべての民のうちから、有能な人で、神を恐れ、誠実で不義の利を憎む人を選び、それを民の上に立てて、千人の長、百人の長、五十人の長、十人の長としなさい。

18:22
　平素は彼らに民をさばかせ、大事件はすべてあなたの所に持ってこさせ、小事件はすべて彼らにさばかせなさい。こうしてあなたを身軽にし、あなたと共に彼らに、荷を負わせなさい。

18:23
　あなたが、もしこの事を行い、神もまたあなたに命じられるならば、あなたは耐えることができ、この民もまた、みな安んじてその所に帰ることができよう」。

18:24
　モーセはしゅうとの言葉に従い、すべて言われたようにした。

18:25
　すなわち、モーセはすべてのイスラエルのうちから有能な人を選んで、民の上に長として立て、千人の長、百人の長、五十人の長、十人の長とした。

18:26
　平素は彼らが民をさばき、むずかしい事件はモーセに持ってきたが、小さい事件はすべて彼らみずからさばいた。

18:27
　こうしてモーセはしゅうとを送り返したので、その国に帰って行った。

+ First Reading: Jeremiah 17:5-10

5 Thus says Yahweh: Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from Yahweh.

6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited.

7 Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose trust Yahweh is.

8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when heat comes, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?

10 I, Yahweh, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

1 Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stand on the path of sinners,

19 “Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day.

20 A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried.

23 In Hades§, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom.

24 He cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue! For I am in anguish in this flame.’

25 “But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in the same way, bad things. But now here he is comforted and you are in anguish.

26 Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’

27 “He said, ‘I ask you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house;

28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, so they won’t also come into this place of torment.’

29 “But Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’

30 “He said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if one rises from the dead.’”

+ Today's Reading: Exodus 18:13-27

13 It happened on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.

14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?”

15 Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

16 When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”

17 Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

18 You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

19 Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.

20 You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

22 Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

23 If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace.”

24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

25 Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.
