28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

30 Whom he predestined, those he also called. Whom he called, those he also justified. Whom he justified, those he also glorified.

31 What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

32 He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things?

33 Who could bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies.

34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

37 No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

　昔の人々に『殺すな。殺す者は裁判を受けねばならない』と言われていたことは、あなたがたの聞いているところである。

　しかし、わたしはあなたがたに言う。兄弟に対して怒る者は、だれでも裁判を受けねばならない。兄弟にむかって愚か者と言う者は、議会に引きわたされるであろう。また、ばか者と言う者は、地獄の火に投げ込まれるであろう。

　だから、祭壇に供え物をささげようとする場合、兄弟が自分に対して何かうらみをいだいていることを、そこで思い出したなら、

　その供え物を祭壇の前に残しておき、まず行ってその兄弟と和解し、それから帰ってきて、供え物をささげることにしなさい。

42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.

43 He said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.”
He went up, and looked, and said, “There is nothing.”
He said, “Go again” seven times.

44 It happened at the seventh time, that he said, “Behold, a small cloud, like a man’s hand, is rising out of the sea.”
He said, “Go up, tell Ahab, ‘Get ready and go down, so that the rain doesn’t stop you.’”

45 It happened in a little while, that the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

12 Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect; but I press on, if it is so that I may take hold of that for which also I was taken hold of by Christ Jesus.

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,

14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, think this way. If in anything you think otherwise, God will also reveal that to you.

16 Nevertheless, to the extent that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule. Let us be of the same mind.

　わたしが律法や預言者を廃するためにきた、と思ってはならない。廃するためではなく、成就するためにきたのである。

　よく言っておく。天地が滅び行くまでは、律法の一点、一画もすたることはなく、ことごとく全うされるのである。

5:19
　それだから、これらの最も小さいいましめの一つでも破り、またそうするように人に教えたりする者は、天国で最も小さい者と呼ばれるであろう。しかし、これをおこないまたそう教える者は、天国で大いなる者と呼ばれるであろう。

　そこでアハブはイスラエルのすべての人に人をつかわして、預言者たちをカルメル山に集めた。

18:21
　そのときエリヤはすべての民に近づいて言った、「あなたがたはいつまで二つのものの間に迷っているのですか。主が神ならばそれに従いなさい。しかしバアルが神ならば、それに従いなさい」。民はひと言も彼に答えなかった。

　エリヤは民に言った、「わたしはただひとり残った主の預言者です。しかしバアルの預言者は四百五十人あります。

　われわれに二頭の牛をください。そして一頭の牛を彼らに選ばせ、それを切り裂いて、たきぎの上に載せ、それに火をつけずにおかせなさい。わたしも一頭の牛を整え、それをたきぎの上に載せて火をつけずにおきましょう。

　こうしてあなたがたはあなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。わたしは主の名を呼びましょう。そして火をもって答える神を神としましょう」。民は皆答えて「それがよかろう」と言った。

　そこでエリヤはバアルの預言者たちに言った、「あなたがたは大ぜいだから初めに一頭の牛を選んで、それを整え、あなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。ただし火をつけてはなりません」。

　彼らは与えられた牛を取って整え、朝から昼までバアルの名を呼んで「バアルよ、答えてください」と言った。しかしなんの声もなく、また答える者もなかったので、彼らは自分たちの造った祭壇のまわりに踊った。

　昼になってエリヤは彼らをあざけって言った、「彼は神だから、大声をあげて呼びなさい。彼は考えにふけっているのか、よそへ行ったのか、旅に出たのか、または眠っていて起されなければならないのか」。

　そこで彼らは大声に呼ばわり、彼らのならわしに従って、刀とやりで身を傷つけ、血をその身に流すに至った。

　こうして昼が過ぎても彼らはなお叫び続けて、夕の供え物をささげる時にまで及んだ。しかしなんの声もなく、答える者もなく、また顧みる者もなかった。

　その時エリヤはすべての民にむかって「わたしに近寄りなさい」と言ったので、民は皆彼に近寄った。彼はこわれている主の祭壇を繕った。

　そしてエリヤは昔、主の言葉がヤコブに臨んで、「イスラエルをあなたの名とせよ」と言われたヤコブの子らの部族の数にしたがって十二の石を取り、

　その石で主の名によって祭壇を築き、祭壇の周囲に種二セヤをいれるほどの大きさの、みぞを作った。

　また、たきぎを並べ、牛を切り裂いてたきぎの上に載せて言った、「四つのかめに水を満たし、それを燔祭とたきぎの上に注げ」。

　また言った、「それを二度せよ」。二度それをすると、また言った、「三度それをせよ」。三度それをした。

　水は祭壇の周囲に流れた。またみぞにも水を満たした。

　夕の供え物をささげる時になって、預言者エリヤは近寄って言った、「アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神、主よ、イスラエルでは、あなたが神であること、わたしがあなたのしもべであって、あなたの言葉に従ってこのすべての事を行ったことを、今日知らせてください。

　主よ、わたしに答えてください、わたしに答えてください。主よ、この民にあなたが神であること、またあなたが彼らの心を翻されたのであることを知らせてください」。

　そのとき主の火が下って燔祭と、たきぎと、石と、ちりとを焼きつくし、またみぞの水をなめつくした。

　民は皆見て、ひれ伏して言った、「主が神である。主が神である」。

　あなたがたのうちに働きかけて、その願いを起させ、かつ実現に至らせるのは神であって、それは神のよしとされるところだからである。

　すべてのことを、つぶやかず疑わないでしなさい。

　それは、あなたがたが責められるところのない純真な者となり、曲った邪悪な時代のただ中にあって、傷のない神の子となるためである。あなたがたは、いのちの言葉を堅く持って、彼らの間で星のようにこの世に輝いている。

+ First Reading: 1 Kings 18:20-39

20 So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.

21 Elijah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.”
The people answered him not a word.

22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred fifty men.

23 Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.

24 You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh. The God who answers by fire, let him be God.”
All the people answered, “It is well said.”

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first; for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”

26 They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, “Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice, nor any who answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.

27 It happened at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, “Cry aloud; for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”

28 They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.

29 It was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the offering; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any who regarded.

30 Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me”; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the altar of Yahweh that was thrown down.

31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”

32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh. He made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed.

33 He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, “Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the wood.”

34 He said, “Do it a second time”; and they did it the second time. He said, “Do it a third time”; and they did it the third time.

35 The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.

36 It happened at the time of the offering of the offering, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, “Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.

37 Hear me, Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again.”

38 Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, “Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!”

26 since he longed for you all, and was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick.

27 For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.

28 I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.

29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor,

30 because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.

　あなたがたは、世の光である。山の上にある町は隠れることができない。

　また、あかりをつけて、それを枡の下におく者はいない。むしろ燭台の上において、家の中のすべてのものを照させるのである。

　そのように、あなたがたの光を人々の前に輝かし、そして、人々があなたがたのよいおこないを見て、天にいますあなたがたの父をあがめるようにしなさい。

7 It happened after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

8 The word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you.”

10 So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, “Please get me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”

11 As she was going to get it, he called to her, and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

12 She said, “As Yahweh your God lives, I don’t have a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me of it a little cake first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.

14 For thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of meal shall not empty, neither shall the jar of oil fail, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth.’”

15 She went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, ate many days. 16 The jar of meal didn’t empty, neither did the jar of oil fail, according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke by Elijah.

　病人をいやし、死人をよみがえらせ、らい病人をきよめ、悪霊を追い出せ。ただで受けたのだから、ただで与えるがよい。

　財布の中に金、銀または銭を入れて行くな。

10:10
　旅行のための袋も、二枚の下着も、くつも、つえも持って行くな。働き人がその食物を得るのは当然である。

10:11
　どの町、どの村にはいっても、その中でだれがふさわしい人か、たずね出して、立ち去るまではその人のところにとどまっておれ。

　その家にはいったなら、平安を祈ってあげなさい。

10:13
　もし平安を受けるにふさわしい家であれば、あなたがたの祈る平安はその家に来るであろう。もしふさわしくなければ、その平安はあなたがたに帰って来るであろう。

　さて、兄弟たちよ。わたしの身に起った事が、むしろ福音の前進に役立つようになったことを、あなたがたに知ってもらいたい。

　すなわち、わたしが獄に捕われているのはキリストのためであることが、兵営全体にもそのほかのすべての人々にも明らかになり、

1:14
　そして兄弟たちのうち多くの者は、わたしの入獄によって主にある確信を得、恐れることなく、ますます勇敢に、神の言を語るようになった。

1:15
　一方では、ねたみや闘争心からキリストを宣べ伝える者がおり、他方では善意からそうする者がいる。

1:16
　後者は、わたしが福音を弁明するために立てられていることを知り、愛の心でキリストを伝え、

1:17
　前者は、わたしの入獄の苦しみに更に患難を加えようと思って、純真な心からではなく、党派心からそうしている。

　すると、どうなのか。見えからであるにしても、真実からであるにしても、要するに、伝えられているのはキリストなのだから、わたしはそれを喜んでいるし、また喜ぶであろう。

　そこで、イエスはふたりの弟子を使いに出して言われた、「市内に行くと、水がめを持っている男に出会うであろう。その人について行きなさい。

　そして、その人がはいって行く家の主人に言いなさい、『弟子たちと一緒に過越の食事をする座敷はどこか、と先生が言っておられます』。

　するとその主人は、席を整えて用意された二階の広間を見せてくれるから、そこにわたしたちのために用意をしなさい」。

4 Moses wrote all the words of Yahweh, and rose up early in the morning, and built an altar under the mountain, and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.

5 He sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of cattle to Yahweh.

6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

7 He took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people, and they said, “All that Yahweh has spoken will we do, and be obedient.”

8 Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, “Look, this is the blood of the covenant, which Yahweh has made with you concerning all these words.”

41 Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and saw how the multitude cast money into the treasury. Many who were rich cast in much.

42 A poor widow came, and she cast in two small brass coins,††literally, lepta (or widow’s mites). Lepta are very small brass coins worth half a quadrans each, which is a quarter of the copper assarion. Lepta are worth less than 1% of an agricultural worker’s daily wages. which equal a quadrans coin.‡‡A quadrans is a coin worth about 1/64 of a denarius. A denarius is about one day’s wages for an agricultural laborer.

43 He called his disciples to himself, and said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, this poor widow gave more than all those who are giving into the treasury,

44 for they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on.”

　心をつくし、精神をつくし、思いをつくし、力をつくして、主なるあなたの神を愛せよ』。

　第二はこれである、『自分を愛するようにあなたの隣り人を愛せよ』。これより大事ないましめは、ほかにない」。

　そこで、この律法学者はイエスに言った、「先生、仰せのとおりです、『神はひとりであって、そのほかに神はない』と言われたのは、ほんとうです。

　また『心をつくし、知恵をつくし、力をつくして神を愛し、また自分を愛するように隣り人を愛する』ということは、すべての燔祭や犠牲よりも、はるかに大事なことです」。

+ First Reading: 2 Timothy 2:8-15

8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my Good News,

9 in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God’s word isn’t chained.

10 Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones’ sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

11 This saying is faithful:
“For if we died with him,
we will also live with him.

12 If we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we deny him,
he also will deny us.

13 If we are faithless,
he remains faithful.
He can’t deny himself.”

14 Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord, that they don’t argue about words, to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear.

15 Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.

24 These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.

25 For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children.

26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27 For it is written,
“Rejoice, you barren who don’t bear.
Break forth and shout, you that don’t travail.
For more are the children of the desolate than of her who has a husband.” †Isaiah 54:1

28 Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

29 But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.

30 However what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the handmaid and her son, for the son of the handmaid will not inherit with the son of the free woman.”‡Genesis 21:10

31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the free woman.

　「先生、モーセは、わたしたちのためにこう書いています、『もし、ある人の兄が死んで、その残された妻に、子がない場合には、弟はこの女をめとって、兄のために子をもうけねばならない』。

　ここに、七人の兄弟がいました。長男は妻をめとりましたが、子がなくて死に、

　次男がその女をめとって、また子をもうけずに死に、三男も同様でした。

12:22
　こうして、七人ともみな子孫を残しませんでした。最後にその女も死にました。

12:23
　復活のとき、彼らが皆よみがえった場合、この女はだれの妻なのでしょうか。七人とも彼女を妻にしたのですが」。

　イエスは言われた、「あなたがたがそんな思い違いをしているのは、聖書も神の力も知らないからではないか。

☆今日の読書：ガラテヤの信徒への手紙(3:15-4:7)

　兄弟たちよ。世のならわしを例にとって言おう。人間の遺言でさえ、いったん作成されたら、これを無効にしたり、これに付け加えたりすることは、だれにもできない。

3:16
　さて、約束は、アブラハムと彼の子孫とに対してなされたのである。それは、多数をさして「子孫たちとに」と言わずに、ひとりをさして「あなたの子孫とに」と言っている。これは、キリストのことである。

3:17
　わたしの言う意味は、こうである。神によってあらかじめ立てられた契約が、四百三十年の後にできた律法によって破棄されて、その約束がむなしくなるようなことはない。

3:18
　もし相続が、律法に基いてなされるとすれば、もはや約束に基いたものではない。ところが事実、神は約束によって、相続の恵みをアブラハムに賜わったのである。

3:19
　それでは、律法はなんであるか。それは違反を促すため、あとから加えられたのであって、約束されていた子孫が来るまで存続するだけのものであり、かつ、天使たちをとおし、仲介者の手によって制定されたものにすぎない。

　仲介者なるものは、一方だけに属する者ではない。しかし、神はひとりである。

　では、律法は神の約束と相いれないものか。断じてそうではない。もし人を生かす力のある律法が与えられていたとすれば、義はたしかに律法によって実現されたであろう。

　しかし、約束が、信じる人々にイエス・キリストに対する信仰によって与えられるために、聖書はすべての人を罪の下に閉じ込めたのである。

　しかし、信仰が現れる前には、わたしたちは律法の下で監視されており、やがて啓示される信仰の時まで閉じ込められていた。

　このようにして律法は、信仰によって義とされるために、わたしたちをキリストに連れて行く養育掛となったのである。

　しかし、いったん信仰が現れた以上、わたしたちは、もはや養育掛のもとにはいない。

3 I thank God, whom I serve as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience. How unceasing is my memory of you in my petitions, night and day

6 For this cause, I remind you that you should stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

7 For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

8 Therefore don’t be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but endure hardship for the Good News according to the power of God,

20 There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying left no offspring.

21 The second took her, and died, leaving no children behind him. The third likewise;

22 and the seven took her and left no children. Last of all the woman also died.

23 In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be of them? For the seven had her as a wife.”

24 Jesus answered them, “Isn’t this because you are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God?

25 For when they will rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

26 But about the dead, that they are raised; haven’t you read in the book of Moses, about the Bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’† ?

27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are therefore badly mistaken.”

3:15 Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void, or adds to it.

16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He doesn’t say, “To seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “To your seed,”†† which is Christ.

17 Now I say this. A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect.

18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by promise.

19 What then is the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the seed should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.

20 Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.

21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could make alive, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law.

22 But the Scriptures imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24 So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

29 If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to promise.

4:1 But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all;

2 but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father.

3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.

4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law,

5 that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of children.

6 And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba,* Father!”

7 So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

　彼らはきてイエスに言った、「先生、わたしたちはあなたが真実なかたで、だれをも、はばかられないことを知っています。あなたは人に分け隔てをなさらないで、真理に基いて神の道を教えてくださいます。ところで、カイザルに税金を納めてよいでしょうか、いけないでしょうか。納めるべきでしょうか、納めてはならないのでしょうか」。

12:15
　イエスは彼らの偽善を見抜いて言われた、「なぜわたしをためそうとするのか。デナリを持ってきて見せなさい」。

12:16
　彼らはそれを持ってきた。そこでイエスは言われた、「これは、だれの肖像、だれの記号か」。彼らは「カイザルのです」と答えた。

12:17
　するとイエスは言われた、「カイザルのものはカイザルに、神のものは神に返しなさい」。彼らはイエスに驚嘆した。

　ところが、ケパがアンテオケにきたとき、彼に非難すべきことがあったので、わたしは面とむかって彼をなじった。

　というのは、ヤコブのもとからある人々が来るまでは、彼は異邦人と食を共にしていたのに、彼らがきてからは、割礼の者どもを恐れ、しだいに身を引いて離れて行ったからである。

2:13
　そして、ほかのユダヤ人たちも彼と共に偽善の行為をし、バルナバまでがそのような偽善に引きずり込まれた。

2:14
　彼らが福音の真理に従ってまっすぐに歩いていないのを見て、わたしは衆人の面前でケパに言った、「あなたは、ユダヤ人であるのに、自分自身はユダヤ人のように生活しないで、異邦人のように生活していながら、どうして異邦人にユダヤ人のようになることをしいるのか」。

　わたしたちは生れながらのユダヤ人であって、異邦人なる罪人ではないが、

　人の義とされるのは律法の行いによるのではなく、ただキリスト・イエスを信じる信仰によることを認めて、わたしたちもキリスト・イエスを信じたのである。それは、律法の行いによるのではなく、キリストを信じる信仰によって義とされるためである。なぜなら、律法の行いによっては、だれひとり義とされることがないからである。

　しかし、キリストにあって義とされることを求めることによって、わたしたち自身が罪人であるとされるのなら、キリストは罪に仕える者なのであろうか。断じてそうではない。

　もしわたしが、いったん打ちこわしたものを、再び建てるとすれば、それこそ、自分が違反者であることを表明することになる。

　わたしは、神に生きるために、律法によって律法に死んだ。わたしはキリストと共に十字架につけられた。

　キリストは、わたしたちのためにのろいとなって、わたしたちを律法ののろいからあがない出して下さった。聖書に、「木にかけられる者は、すべてのろわれる」と書いてある。

　それは、アブラハムの受けた祝福が、イエス・キリストにあって異邦人に及ぶためであり、約束された御霊を、わたしたちが信仰によって受けるためである。

14 Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without blemish and blameless in his sight.

15a Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation;

17 You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness.

15 “We, being Jews by nature, and not Gentile sinners,

16 yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.

17 But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ a servant of sin? Certainly not!

18 For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a law-breaker.

19 For I, through the law, died to the law, that I might live to God.

20 I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

21 I don’t make void the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!”

3:1 Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth among you as crucified?

2 I just want to learn this from you. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?

3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh?

4 Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain?

5 He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you, and works miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?

6 Even as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.”

7 Know therefore that those who are of faith, the same are children of Abraham.

8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.”*

9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them.”†

11 Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, “The righteous will live by faith.”‡

12 The law is not of faith, but, “The man who does them will live by them.”§

13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,”**

14 that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

　季節になったので、農夫たちのところへ、ひとりの僕を送って、ぶどう園の収穫の分け前を取り立てさせようとした。

　すると、彼らはその僕をつかまえて、袋だたきにし、から手で帰らせた。

12:4
　また他の僕を送ったが、その頭をなぐって侮辱した。

12:5
　そこでまた他の者を送ったが、今度はそれを殺してしまった。そのほか、なお大ぜいの者を送ったが、彼らを打ったり、殺したりした。

12:6
　ここに、もうひとりの者がいた。それは彼の愛子であった。自分の子は敬ってくれるだろうと思って、最後に彼をつかわした。

6 Therefore still having one, his beloved son, he sent him last to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

7 But those farmers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’

8 They took him, killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.

9 What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.

10 Haven’t you even read this Scripture:
‘The stone which the builders rejected,
the same was made the head of the corner.

12 They tried to seize him, but they feared the multitude; for they perceived that he spoke the parable against them. They left him, and went away.

15 But when it was the good pleasure of God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me through his grace,

16 to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I didn’t immediately confer with flesh and blood,

17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia. Then I returned to Damascus.

18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Peter, and stayed with him fifteen days.

19 But of the other apostles I saw no one, except James, the Lord’s brother.

20 Now about the things which I write to you, behold, before God, I’m not lying.

21 Then I came to the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

22 I was still unknown by face to the assemblies of Judea which were in Christ,

23 but they only heard: “He who once persecuted us now preaches the faith that he once tried to destroy.”

24 And they glorified God in me.

2:1 Then after a period of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me.

2 I went up by revelation, and I laid before them the Good News which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately before those who were respected, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.

3 But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.

4 This was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who stole in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage;

5 to whom we gave no place in the way of subjection, not for an hour, that the truth of the Good News might continue with you.

6 But from those who were reputed to be important (whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God doesn’t show partiality to man)―they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me,

7 but to the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the Good News for the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the Good News for the circumcision

8 (for he who appointed Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision appointed me also to the Gentiles);

9 and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision.

10 They only asked us to remember the poor―which very thing I was also zealous to do.

　兄弟たちよ。わたしもまた、あなたがたの所に行ったとき、神のあかしを宣べ伝えるのに、すぐれた言葉や知恵を用いなかった。

　なぜなら、わたしはイエス・キリスト、しかも十字架につけられたキリスト以外のことは、あなたがたの間では何も知るまいと、決心したからである。

2:3
　わたしがあなたがたの所に行った時には、弱くかつ恐れ、ひどく不安であった。

2:4
　そして、わたしの言葉もわたしの宣教も、巧みな知恵の言葉によらないで、霊と力との証明によったのである。

2:5
　それは、あなたがたの信仰が人の知恵によらないで、神の力によるものとなるためであった。

　しかしわたしたちは、円熟している者の間では、知恵を語る。この知恵は、この世の者の知恵ではなく、この世の滅び行く支配者たちの知恵でもない。

　「何の権威によってこれらの事をするのですか。だれが、そうする権威を授けたのですか」。

　そこで、イエスは彼らに言われた、「一つだけ尋ねよう。それに答えてほしい。そうしたら、何の権威によって、わたしがこれらの事をするのか、あなたがたに言おう。

　ヨハネのバプテスマは天からであったか、人からであったか、答えなさい」。

16 But be it so, I did not myself burden you. But, being crafty, I caught you with deception.

18 I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? Didn’t we walk in the same spirit? Didn’t we walk in the same steps?

19 Again, do you think that we are excusing ourselves to you? In the sight of God we speak in Christ. But all things, beloved, are for your edifying.

20 For I am afraid that by any means, when I come, I might find you not the way I want to, and that I might be found by you as you don’t desire; that by any means there would be strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, whisperings, proud thoughts, riots;

21 that again when I come my God would humble me before you, and I would mourn for many of those who have sinned before now, and not repented of the uncleanness and sexual immorality and lustfulness which they committed.

13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you. “At the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.”*

2 I have said beforehand, and I do say beforehand, as when I was present the second time, so now, being absent, I write to those who have sinned before now, and to all the rest, that, if I come again, I will not spare;

3 seeing that you seek a proof of Christ who speaks in me; who toward you is not weak, but is powerful in you.

4 For he was crucified through weakness, yet he lives through the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we will live with him through the power of God toward you.

5 Test your own selves, whether you are in the faith. Test your own selves. Or don’t you know as to your own selves, that Jesus Christ is in you?―unless indeed you are disqualified.

6 But I hope that you will know that we aren’t disqualified.

7 Now I pray to God that you do no evil; not that we may appear approved, but that you may do that which is honorable, though we are as reprobate.

8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.

9 For we rejoice when we are weak and you are strong. And this we also pray for, even your perfecting.

10 For this cause I write these things while absent, that I may not deal sharply when present, according to the authority which the Lord gave me for building up, and not for tearing down.

　こうしてイエスはエルサレムに着き、宮にはいられた。そして、すべてのものを見まわった後、もはや時もおそくなっていたので、十二弟子と共にベタニヤに出て行かれた。

　翌日、彼らがベタニヤから出かけてきたとき、イエスは空腹をおぼえられた。

11:13
　そして、葉の茂ったいちじくの木を遠くからごらんになって、その木に何かありはしないかと近寄られたが、葉のほかは何も見当らなかった。いちじくの季節でなかったからである。

11:14
　そこで、イエスはその木にむかって、「今から後いつまでも、おまえの実を食べる者がないように」と言われた。弟子たちはこれを聞いていた。

11:15
　それから、彼らはエルサレムにきた。イエスは宮に入り、宮の庭で売り買いしていた人々を追い出しはじめ、両替人の台や、はとを売る者の腰掛をくつがえし、

　また器ものを持って宮の庭を通り抜けるのをお許しにならなかった。

+ First Reading: 1 Peter 4:7-13

7 But the end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer.

8 And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

10 As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

11 If anyone speaks, let it be as it were the very words of God. If anyone serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

12 Beloved, don’t be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you, to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you.

13 But because you are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory you also may rejoice with exceeding joy.

10 Say among the nations, “Yahweh reigns.”
The world is also established.
It can’t be moved.
He will judge the peoples with equity.

11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice.
Let the sea roar, and its fullness!

12 Let the field and all that is in it exult!
Then all the trees of the woods shall sing for joy

13 before Yahweh; for he comes,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
the peoples with his truth.

+ Gospel: Mark 11:11-26

11 Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem. When he had looked around at everything, it being now evening, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

12 The next day, when they had come out from Bethany, he was hungry.

13 Seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

14 Jesus told it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” and his disciples heard it.

15 They came to Jerusalem, and Jesus entered into the temple, and began to throw out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of those who sold the doves.

16 He would not allow anyone to carry a container through the temple.

17 He taught, saying to them, “Isn’t it written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations?’§ But you have made it a den of robbers!”**

18 The chief priests and the scribes heard it, and sought how they might destroy him. For they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.

19 When evening came, he went out of the city.

20 As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.

21 Peter, remembering, said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which you cursed has withered away.”

22 Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.

23 For most certainly I tell you, whoever may tell this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening; he shall have whatever he says.

24 Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them.

25 Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.

26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions.”

11:30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that concern my weakness.

31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, he who is blessed forevermore, knows that I don’t lie.

32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of the Damascenes desiring to arrest me.

33 Through a window I was let down in a basket by the wall, and escaped his hands.

12:1 It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. For I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

2 I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I don’t know, or whether out of the body, I don’t know; God knows), such a one caught up into the third heaven.

3 I know such a man (whether in the body, or outside of the body, I don’t know; God knows),

4 how he was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

5 On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in my weaknesses.

6 For if I would desire to boast, I will not be foolish; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, so that no man may think more of me than that which he sees in me, or hears from me.

7 By reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted excessively, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, that I should not be exalted excessively.

8 Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

9 He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

10 Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.

11 I have become foolish in boasting. You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you, for in nothing was I inferior to the very best apostles, though I am nothing.

12 Truly the signs of an apostle were worked among you in all patience, in signs and wonders and mighty works.

13 For what is there in which you were made inferior to the rest of the assemblies, unless it is that I myself was not a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong.
