ヨハネによる福音 8:12-20
イエスは、また人々に語ってこう言われた、「わたしは世の光である。わたしに従って来る者は、やみのうちを歩くことがなく、命の光をもつであろう」。
するとパリサイ人たちがイエスに言った、「あなたは、自分のことをあかししている。あなたのあかしは真実ではない」。
イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「たとい、わたしが自分のことをあかししても、わたしのあかしは真実である。それは、わたしがどこからきたのか、また、どこへ行くのかを知っているからである。しかし、あなたがたは、わたしがどこからきて、どこへ行くのかを知らない。
あなたがたは肉によって人をさばくが、わたしはだれもさばかない。
しかし、もしわたしがさばくとすれば、わたしのさばきは正しい。なぜなら、わたしはひとりではなく、わたしをつかわされたかたが、わたしと一緒だからである。
あなたがたの律法には、ふたりによる証言は真実だと、書いてある。
わたし自身のことをあかしするのは、わたしであるし、わたしをつかわされた父も、わたしのことをあかしして下さるのである」。
すると、彼らはイエスに言った、「あなたの父はどこにいるのか」。イエスは答えられた、「あなたがたは、わたしをもわたしの父をも知っていない。もし、あなたがたがわたしを知っていたなら、わたしの父をも知っていたであろう」。

ダニエル書補遺・スザンナ 1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62※
1節
バビロンにヨアキムという男が住んでいた。
2節
男は妻をめとった。ケルキアの娘で、名をスザンナといい、大層美しく、主を畏れるひとであった。
3節
また、彼女の両親も正しい人で、自分たちの娘をモーセの律法に従って教育した。
4節
夫ヨアキムは、大変裕福で、その家の隣に美しい庭園を持っていた。ヨアキムは、この上なく評判の良い人であったので、ユダヤ人たちはよく彼の所に集まった。
5節
さて、その年、民の中から裁判官として二人の長老が選ばれた。「バビロンで、民を治めるはずの裁判官である長老から不法が始まった」と主が語られたのは、この二人についてである。
6節
二人はいつもヨアキムの家に詰めており、裁きを求める人々は皆、彼らのもとにやって来た。
7節
正午になり人々が立ち去ると、スザンナは、夫の庭園に入り散策するのが常であった。
8節
二人の長老は、彼女が毎日庭に入り散策するのを見て、彼女に欲情を抱くようになった。
9節
二人は理性を失い、天から目を背けて仰ぎ見ることもせず、正しい裁きに心を用いることもしなくなった。
15節
彼らが、折をうかがっていると、彼女がいつものように侍女二人だけを伴って庭に出て来たが、非常に暑い日であったので、水浴びをしようと思った。
16節
そこには、隠れてのぞいている二人の長老のほかは、だれもいなかった。
17節
スザンナは侍女に、「オリーブ油と香油を持って来なさい。水浴びをしますから庭園の戸は閉めておきなさい」と言った。
19節
侍女たちが出て行くと、二人の長老は立ち上がり、スザンナのもとに走り寄った。
20節
彼らは言った。「ごらん。庭園の戸は閉じている。だれも見ていません。わたしたちは、あなたが欲しくてたまりません。言うことを聞いて身を任せなさい。
21節
さもなければ、わたしたちは、『あなたが、若い男と一緒にいたので、侍女たちを下がらせたのだ』と証言します。」
22節
そこで、スザンナは嘆息して言った。「わたしには逃げ道がありません。もし身を任せれば、わたしは死を免れません。もしそうしなければ、今度はあなたたちの罠にかかることになります。
23節
そんなことをして主の前に罪を犯すよりは、あなたたちの罠にかかる方がましです。」
24節
こう言って、スザンナは大声で叫びたてた。すると二人の長老も彼女に負けじと叫びたて、
25節
一人が走って行き、庭園の戸を開け放った。
26節
庭園の叫び声を聞きつけて、家の者たちは彼女の身に何事が起きたのかと、わきの戸口から駆け込んで来た。
27節
そこで、長老たちは自分らの作り話をしたが、召し使いたちは非常に恥ずかしい思いでこれを聞いた。そのようなことは、スザンナについて言われたことがなかったからである。
28節
翌日、人々が彼女の夫ヨアキムの家に集まったとき、二人の長老らもやって来た。二人は、スザンナを死罪に定めようというよこしまな考えを抱いていたのである。人々を前にして彼らは言った。
29節
「ケルキアの娘、ヨアキムの妻スザンナを呼んで来なさい。」人々は彼女を呼びにやった。
30節
スザンナは、両親や子供たち、それに親族の者たち皆と一緒にやって来た。
33節
彼女の身内の者も、見ていた人たちも皆泣いた。
34節
二人の長老は、人々の中央に立ち、彼女の頭に手を置いた。
35節
彼女は泣きながら天を仰いだ。心から主を信頼していたからである。
36節
長老は言った。「我々が庭園を歩いておりますと、この女が二人のはしためを伴って入って来て、庭園の戸を閉め、彼女らを下がらせました。
37節
すると、隠れていた一人の若者が彼女に近づき、彼女と一緒に横たわりました。
38節
我々は庭園の片隅にいたのですが、このよこしまな行為を見て、彼らの方に走って行きました。
39節
我々は、二人が情を交わしているのを見ましたが、その男を取り押さえることはできませんでした。彼は我々より力が強く、戸を開けて逃げてしまったのです。
40節
そこで、我々はこの女を捕らえて、あの若者がだれかと問いただしましたが、
41節
答えようとしませんでした。我々は、この事実を証言します。」集まっていた人々は、二人が民の長老であり、裁判官であるゆえに、その言葉を信じ、彼女を死罪に定めた。
42節
すると、スザンナは、大声で叫んだ。「ああ、永遠の神、隠されたことを知り、あらゆることをその起こる前から知っておられる方よ。
43節
彼らがわたしについて偽証したことをあなたはご存じです。御覧ください。この人たちが悪意をもって作り上げたことをわたしは何一つしませんでした。それなのに死なねばなりません。」
44節
主は彼女の声を聞かれた。
45節
彼女が処刑のために引かれて行くとき、神はダニエルという若者の内にある、聖なる霊を呼び覚まされた。
46節
彼は大声で、「わたしは、この婦人の血について責任はない」と叫んだ。
47節
それで、人々は皆、ダニエルの方を向いて、「あなたが言ったことは、いったい、どういうことなのか」と言った。
48節
ダニエルは人々の真ん中に立って言った。「イスラエルの子らよ、あなたがたは、それほど愚かなのですか。究明もせず、真実も知らずに、イスラエルの娘を断罪するのですか。
49節
もう一度、裁きの場に戻りなさい。なぜならこの二人は彼女について偽証したからです。」
50節
そこで、人々は皆、急いで戻った。ほかの長老たちはダニエルに言った。「こちらへ来て我々の真ん中に座りなさい。そしてわたしたちにはっきり言いなさい。神があなたに長老の特権を与えられたのだから。」
51節
ダニエルは彼らに言った。「あの二人を遠く引き離してください。わたしが審問いたします。」
52節
それで、二人が別々に引き離されると、ダニエルはそのうちの一人を呼んで言った。「悪の日々を重ねてきた老いぼれよ、今や、あなたが過去に犯した罪の報いがやってきた。
53節
主が、『罪なき人、正しい人を殺してはならない』と言っておられるにもかかわらず、あなたは不正な裁きを行い、罪なき人を断罪し、責めある者を見逃した。
54節
あなたが彼女を見たと言うのなら言っていただきましょう。二人が一緒にいたのはどんな木の下でしたか。」それで彼は、「乳香樹の下だ」と答えた。
55節
ダニエルは言った。「まさしくあなたは致命的な偽証をしたのだ。今や、神の使いが、神の判決を受け取り、あなたを二つに裂く。」
56節
次にダニエルは彼を去らせ、他の一人を連れて来るよう命じた。ダニエルは彼に言った。「カナンの末裔よ、あなたはユダ族の子孫である資格はない。あなたは美貌に目がくらみ、欲情に心を迷わせた。
57節
あなたたちはいつもこのように、イスラエルの娘たちにしていたのだ。彼女らは恐ろしさのあまりあなたたちに身を任せた。しかし、ユダの娘の中に一人、あなたたちのよこしまなふるまいに、屈服しなかった者がいる。
58節
さて、わたしに答えていただきましょう。二人が一緒のところをあなたが捕らえたのは、どんな木の下でしたか。」彼は、「かしわの木の下だ」と答えた。
59節
ダニエルは言った。「まさしくあなたも致命的な偽証をした。神の使いが剣を持ち、あなたを真っ二つに切り裂こうと待ち構え、あなたたちを討ち滅ぼす。」
60節
すると全会衆は大声で叫び、神を、すなわち御自分に望みを置く人々を救われる神を賛美した。
61節
人々は二人の長老に対して立ち上がった。なぜなら、彼らが偽証人であったことをダニエルが彼ら自身の証言によって明らかにしたからである。人々は二人がその隣人を陥れようとしたのと同じことを彼らに対して行った。
62節
すなわちモーセの律法に従って二人を死刑に処したのである。こうしてこの日、無実の人の血が流されずにすんだ。

Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Gospel : John 8:12-20
12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world.☆ He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, “You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus answered them, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don’t know where I came from, or where I am going.
15 You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.
16 Even if I do judge, my judgement is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.
17 It’s also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.☆
18 I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
19 They said therefore to him, “Where is your Father?”
Jesus answered, “You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

Daniel 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62**
In Babylon there lived a man named Joakim,
who married a very beautiful and God-fearing woman, Susanna,
the daughter of Hilkiah;
her pious parents had trained their daughter
according to the law of Moses.
Joakim was very rich;
he had a garden near his house,
and the Jews had recourse to him often
because he was the most respected of them all.
That year, two elders of the people were appointed judges,
of whom the Lord said, "Wickedness has come out of Babylon:
from the elders who were to govern the people as judges."
These men, to whom all brought their cases,
frequented the house of Joakim.
When the people left at noon,
Susanna used to enter her husband's garden for a walk.
When the old men saw her enter every day for her walk,
they began to lust for her.
They suppressed their consciences;
they would not allow their eyes to look to heaven,
and did not keep in mind just judgments.
One day, while they were waiting for the right moment,
she entered the garden as usual, with two maids only.
She decided to bathe, for the weather was warm.
Nobody else was there except the two elders,
who had hidden themselves and were watching her.
"Bring me oil and soap," she said to the maids,
"and shut the garden doors while I bathe."
As soon as the maids had left,
the two old men got up and hurried to her.
"Look," they said, "the garden doors are shut, and no one can see us;
give in to our desire, and lie with us.
If you refuse, we will testify against you
that you dismissed your maids because a young man was here with you."
"I am completely trapped," Susanna groaned.
"If I yield, it will be my death;
if I refuse, I cannot escape your power.
Yet it is better for me to fall into your power without guilt
than to sin before the Lord."
Then Susanna shrieked, and the old men also shouted at her,
as one of them ran to open the garden doors.
When the people in the house heard the cries from the garden,
they rushed in by the side gate to see what had happened to her.
At the accusations by the old men,
the servants felt very much ashamed,
for never had any such thing been said about Susanna.
When the people came to her husband Joakim the next day,
the two wicked elders also came,
fully determined to put Susanna to death.
Before all the people they ordered:
"Send for Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah,
the wife of Joakim."
When she was sent for,
she came with her parents, children and all her relatives.
All her relatives and the onlookers were weeping.
In the midst of the people the two elders rose up
and laid their hands on her head.
Through tears she looked up to heaven,
for she trusted in the Lord wholeheartedly.
The elders made this accusation:
"As we were walking in the garden alone,
this woman entered with two girls
and shut the doors of the garden, dismissing the girls.
A young man, who was hidden there, came and lay with her.
When we, in a corner of the garden, saw this crime,
we ran toward them.
We saw them lying together,
but the man we could not hold, because he was stronger than we;
he opened the doors and ran off.
Then we seized her and asked who the young man was,
but she refused to tell us.
We testify to this."
The assembly believed them,
since they were elders and judges of the people,
and they condemned her to death.
But Susanna cried aloud:
"O eternal God, you know what is hidden
and are aware of all things before they come to be:
you know that they have testified falsely against me.
Here I am about to die,
though I have done none of the things
with which these wicked men have charged me."
The Lord heard her prayer.
As she was being led to execution,
God stirred up the holy spirit of a young boy named Daniel,
and he cried aloud:
"I will have no part in the death of this woman."
All the people turned and asked him, "What is this you are saying?"
He stood in their midst and continued,
"Are you such fools, O children of Israel!
To condemn a woman of Israel without examination
and without clear evidence?
Return to court, for they have testified falsely against her."
Then all the people returned in haste.
To Daniel the elders said,
"Come, sit with us and inform us,
since God has given you the prestige of old age."
But he replied,
"Separate these two far from each other that I may examine them."
After they were separated one from the other,
he called one of them and said:
"How you have grown evil with age!
Now have your past sins come to term:
passing unjust sentences, condemning the innocent,
and freeing the guilty, although the Lord says,
'The innocent and the just you shall not put to death.'
Now, then, if you were a witness,
tell me under what tree you saw them together."
"Under a mastic tree," he answered.
Daniel replied, "Your fine lie has cost you your head,
for the angel of God shall receive the sentence from him
and split you in two."
Putting him to one side, he ordered the other one to be brought.
Daniel said to him,
"Offspring of Canaan, not of Judah, beauty has seduced you,
lust has subverted your conscience.
This is how you acted with the daughters of Israel,
and in their fear they yielded to you;
but a daughter of Judah did not tolerate your wickedness.
Now, then, tell me under what tree you surprised them together."
"Under an oak," he said.
Daniel replied, "Your fine lie has cost you also your head,
for the angel of God waits with a sword to cut you in two
so as to make an end of you both."
The whole assembly cried aloud,
blessing God who saves those who hope in him.
They rose up against the two elders,
for by their own words Daniel had convicted them of perjury.
According to the law of Moses,
they inflicted on them
the penalty they had plotted to impose on their neighbor:
they put them to death.
Thus was innocent blood spared that day.

12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world.☆ He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, “You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus answered them, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don’t know where I came from, or where I am going.
15 You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.
16 Even if I do judge, my judgement is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.
17 It’s also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.☆
18 I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
19 They said therefore to him, “Where is your Father?”
Jesus answered, “You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
